BIOGRAPHY

me in turkey

Rachel Beckman was born in New York and raised in Virginia. She currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland, where she attended the Maryland Institute College of Art and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She holds a BFA in Fiber with a minor in Creative Writing. In the summer of 2010 she traveled to Turkey with a study abroad program; the experience of travel and being confronted with the challenge of losing yourself in a new place, more than the Turkish art itself, has been a big influence on the way she thinks and creates.

While Rachel’s work centers on intricate hand-woven pieces, her body of work ranges from wall hangings to costumes. Her passion for weaving and traditional craft methods of textile construction come together to tell stories from history and research in cultural anthropology. Her studies in creative writing and her love of literature and storytelling allow her to fully explore and develop the art of the narrative in her studio practice. More recently she has been honing in on her skills as an illustrator and surface designer.

In 2011, she attended the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in a session with Warren Seelig, and yes, it changed her life, reviving an interest in music and performance (including puppetry, parades, and burlesque).

She is currently weaving in her living room, probably as you read this.
