Blocked Wool Hat

This navy blue felt was blocked for a 22 inch head size (my head!) on a wooden block. It has a machine sewn wire in the brim for support; sweatband and decorative elements are all hand sewn.

Diving Dancing Bears Skirt

My Dancing Bears pattern makes a great skirt, but they appear to be falling and I suck at putting in zippers. Will wear with long t-shirts to cover up the mess.

Final Thesis Crit- Fall 2010

Here are a few photos of my set up for my final critique of the semester. I cleaned up my studio and arranged things according to the narrative. Additionally, on Thursday during my crit I will be modeling a new costume, but since I’m still putting a few finishing touches on it I will post pictures later.

The Bareback Rider
Handwoven cloth, braiding, beading, digital print on bamboo twill

For my thesis I am focusing my historical research and response to the circus at the turn of the century and the effects of industrialization and Victorian society on the readings of the female circus performer in the context of the spectacle (idealization and scandal). My interest is centered around the body of the performer, how the body is viewed, and the idea of envy surrounding the feats of the body found in the circus. There is a solemnity to the narrative that comes from my own body standing in for the performer and my own struggle with body image and beauty.
